Eric

Author: Shaun Tan
RRP: NZ$11.99
GT Issue: 2010 T2

As with some of Tan’s other stories this continues the theme of difference. It takes a visiting student to illustrate the ways we can be confused about the way others live their lives. (‘It must be a cultural thing’)

The richness of the learning possibilities enclosed within this small book again shows how Tan’s understanding of the media which he has such control over can add to any educational experience.

The story would fit well within any situation where English is not the first language or indeed where there are students from other countries integrating into classes. It is not limited to any age group and would sit as well within a junior class as with a teenage or adult one.

The story is delightful, and well worth the isolation from the others in Tales from Outer Suburbia. That said however, all the ‘Tales’ would stand alone quite easily. Should Allen and Unwin decide to release the other stories as part of a collection I will be lining up for copies!
